The Hawke family came to Ferelden with a secret: magic.

Conceived as part of a whirlwind love affair, Maura was Malcolm and Leandra's eldest child, and just like her father, Maura was born a mage. She learned early how to control her abilities, thanks to her father's careful teaching - and when a pair of twins was born, the girl having magic as well, she helped her little sister learn that same control. But no one is perfect. With three of the five of them being mages, accidents sometimes happened, and they had to relocate from place to place. Leandra and Malcolm were both determined that their girls wouldn't see the inside of a Circle, even one known for being kind, like the one in Ferelden.

As Maura grew, she could see the effect this had on their family. They seldom had friends, seldom knew their neighbors, and Carver actively resented being uprooted time and time again. Maura couldn't blame him. She felt the lack of friends as well, and started doing small things to try to ingratiate the Hawke family to the nearby farms and villages. She would help them with their harvests and their daily chores. She would bring food and gifts. She would do small deliveries and never ask for payment. Anything she thought would get a little goodwill from the neighbors just in case the Templars started sniffing about.

There were a few close calls, but nothing compared to when the Blight came. Suddenly, she was in charge of getting their family out of Ferelden, getting their family free from the looming threat, but no matter which way they ran, they were in danger. The Darkspawn came from all sides, and only the timely intervention of, of all things, the Witch of the Wilds saved their lives.

Most of their lives.

Maura will always feel that she failed Bethany, and the loss of Carver to a life of fighting, then the loss of her mother to a warped mage -- all of it will weigh on her for the rest of her life. But so long as someone needs her, she will always be there.
